What is CBD?
It seems like everything and everyone is singing the praises of CBD these days. Absolutely everything seems to be infused or made with CBD. From skincare to candy. So what is CBD? Why are people buzzing about it? Is this just another fad that will come and go like so many other miracle cures?
Understanding the Basics of CBD
First, the basics. CBD stands for cannabidiol. This is one of the more than 60 cannabinoid compounds found in cannabis. Most people are familiar with THC or tetrahydrocannabinol within cannabis. This is the cannabinoid that has the mind-altering psychoactive effects and makes one feel high. CBD, however, is non-psychoactive.
CBD comes from either the hemp or marijuana cannabis plant. The CBD commonly sold on the market right now are derived from hemp. This type of CBD has a low percentage of THC. Therefore, you can consume CBD for its assumed health benefits without feeling high. CBD derived from hemp versus marijuana has certain differences yet it is still the same cannabinoid when looked at on a molecular level.
Research has shown that the body is capable of naturally producing its own cannabinoids. It has certain receptors inside the brain referred to as Cannabinoid 1 and 2 receptors, or CB1 and CB2, that control and manage a lot of normal human functions when those cannabinoids enter the body. For example, these receptors are known for helping with pain, inflammation, appetite, cognitive abilities and more. When you supplement with a cannabinoid like CBD it causes the body to increase its production of it. It is assumed that this is how you are able to experience the benefiting effects.
Why are people buzzing?
Back in 2013, a story made headlines of a little girl named Charlotte Figi who was diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy and was having upwards of 300 grand mal seizures a week. When her grandfather started to research some other stories that had success using cannabis they gave it a try. She went from 300 to zero seizures in the first week. To make a long story short, they ended up working with a grower who made a strain that was 30:1 CBD:THC known today as Charlotte’s Web. They were able to administer cannabis to a child without having to worry about the psychoactive effects. To this day it is transforming lives and allowing many people to live with an improved quality life.
Many people took notice and began to realize the beneficial effects on other ailments. And so began what feels like the CBD revolution.
Is this Just a Fad?
There is not enough research currently to understand the full scope of how CBD truly can work in sync to benefit the body. There is anecdotal information stating a wide range of positive benefits CBD has provided. However, many still have concerns. It is still widely an unregulated supplement. More studies have to be done to prove its effectiveness. However, according to an article out of Harvard Medical School stating that the European Journal of Pain published findings on how “CBD applied on the skin could help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis. Another study demonstrated the mechanism by which CBD inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain, two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat.”
While many might view CBD as just another substance getting its 15 minutes of fame, the cannabis industry is optimistic that as time goes on, marijuana prohibition lifts and more studies are completed more findings will reveal a wide range of therapeutic benefits this cannabinoid will provide.
